The Sator Square is a cryptic word square containing a latin palindrome: SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS. The five words, when arranged in a square, can be read left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom, or bottom-to-top. The earliest dateable Sator Square was found in the ruins of Pompeii, which was buried in the ash of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
